The Rowayton heavy crewneck, for the town that grew up on oysters where the Five Mile River meets the Sound. A classic 50/50 fleece sweatshirt with the Rowayton vintage retro logo on the chest in white: the plain, durable one.

Choose this crewneck for durability and price: classic fit, ribbed collar and cuffs, a fleece that shrugs off years of washing. It is the Rowayton sweatshirt to buy in twos, one for home and one for the person who grew up there, and it ships free in the U.S.

A classic-fit unisex crewneck in medium-heavy fleece, made for warmth and durability. Ribbed collar, cuffs & waistband, double-needle seams, and a tear-away label; DTG-printed design. Standard colors are 8.0 oz 50% cotton/50% polyester and Heather Sport colors are 60/40. White may appear off-white and the Orange hue may vary.

Rowayton began in the late 1600s as a fishing and farming hamlet on the Five Mile River within Norwalk, was burned in Tryon’s raid of July 1779, and boomed on oysters in the 1800s, when the Pinkney Park shipyard built the boats. Victorian sea-captain and oysterman houses still line Rowayton Avenue in the Five Mile River Landing Historic District.

The railroad arrived in 1849, and from about 1880 to 1942 Roton Point drew steamship excursions to its dance hall, carousel and roller coaster. Today the village is water on three sides, Bayley Beach, Farm Creek’s tidal marsh and one of the busiest small arts communities on the shore. The mark on this piece is the salty little village.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

Today that character runs to art and sail as much as to oysters. The tradition is old — John Frederick Kensett, the great Hudson River School painter, worked this seascape in his later years — and it is living: the Rowayton Arts Center anchors a creative community on the river, Shakespeare on the Sound fills Pinkney Park each summer, Bayley Beach looks out on the water where the amusement park's carousel once turned, and the harbor stays busy with sailboats where the sloops once raked the beds. The Historic District along Rowayton Avenue, listed in 2009, keeps the shipyard century in plain sight.

The village has one gloriously improbable chapter: the first business computer was born here. In the old Farrell estate stables on Highland Avenue — "The Barn," part of the Rock Ledge estate listed on the National Register in 1977 — engineers of the Remington Rand Corporation developed the Remington Rand 409, the prototype that carried computing out of the laboratory and into the office, in the years when General Douglas MacArthur chaired the company's board. The stables became the Rowayton Community Center and Library in 1966; the village kept the story.

Why People Visit Rowayton

Rowayton offers the Connecticut shore at its most relaxed and characterful — sailing, art, and quiet beaches in a village that has kept its scale and its salt-water soul. Visitors come for the harbor and the shore parks and stay for the unhurried, distilled village that Norwalk keeps at its edge.
