The New Haven hoodie, for the town that was America’s first planned city. A medium-heavy cotton pullover with the New Haven vintage retro logo across the chest in white, made to be worn from the first cold morning to the last.

If you are buying one New Haven piece, this is the one that gets worn most: warm enough for the sideline, the dock and the drive home, and the hoodie that gets borrowed and never returned. It is the gift for the one who moved away from New Haven, and the one that arrives in time for the holidays if you order now.

Medium-heavy fleece gives this unisex hoodie its warmth and durability. It has a regular fit that runs true to size for adults, a three-panel hood, ribbed cuffs and waistband, double-needle stitching at key seams, and a tear-away label. Fabric: 80% combed ring-spun cotton / 20% polyester, with heather shades in cotton–poly blends.

New Haven was laid out on April 3, 1638, on John Brockett’s nine-square grid around the Green, the first planned city in what became the United States. In 1661 the regicides Whalley and Goffe hid from the Crown in Judges’ Cave on West Rock, Yale moved here from Saybrook in 1716, and the city served as co-capital of Connecticut until 1873.

Between the traprock ridges of East Rock and West Rock, the harbor is marked by the 1847 Five Mile Point Light at Lighthouse Point, the three churches still frame the Green, and New Haven-style apizza was born here. The Elm City’s four centuries are the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

Our New Haven logo carries the same emblem every Merlin Classics Connecticut place wears — a Long Island Sound oyster, above "New Haven, Connecticut, Est. 1636," rendered in hand-printed black and white with a worn, vintage feel. The oyster is Connecticut's shoreline mark, the through-line that ties New Haven to every other Connecticut place we make — a nod to the Sound that built these towns. What makes this one New Haven is everything around it: the Elm City, the nine-square Green, the regicides' cave on West Rock. On a tee or a cap it reads less like a souvenir and more like a piece of the Connecticut shore — Est. 1636, worn plain.

Today New Haven is the Elm City still — a harbor-and-ridge city of museums, theaters, and the most argued-over pizza in the country, anchored by four centuries of history. Its story runs from a Quinnipiac homeland through the first planned city in America, the regicides on West Rock, and a Long Island Sound port. Our New Haven designs gather that identity into wearable form — the Elm City, the nine-square Green, the oyster shore. From the nine-square Green to the regicides' cave on West Rock, wear a little of the Elm City's four centuries.

Why People Visit New Haven Connecticut

People come to New Haven for the layered history and the harbor — the first planned city in America, the regicides' cave, the lighthouse on the Sound — and for the museums, theaters, and the apizza the city argues about endlessly. It is compact, walkable, and deep: four centuries of New England on Long Island Sound.
