The New Haven cap, for the town that was America’s first planned city. An unstructured cotton dad cap with the New Haven vintage retro logo embroidered on the front in black thread.

The cap is the easiest New Haven piece to wear every day and the easiest to give: one size, breathable cotton, a curved visor and an antique-brass buckle. It softens with wear and stays on the hook by the door. Order one for the beach bag and one for the glovebox.

Our unisex embroidered dad cap pairs a low-profile, unstructured 6-panel fit with a Permacurv visor and durable four-row visor stitching. Made from breathable cotton with a matching undervisor and a self-fabric hideaway strap with antique-brass buckle. All colors are 100% cotton (camo: 65% polyester / 35% cotton). The classic embroidered finish is durable and vintage-inspired; because embroidery uses thread rather than ink, slight differences from the digital product image are normal. Full details are explained in our Embroidery footer.

New Haven was laid out on April 3, 1638, on John Brockett’s nine-square grid around the Green, the first planned city in what became the United States. In 1661 the regicides Whalley and Goffe hid from the Crown in Judges’ Cave on West Rock, Yale moved here from Saybrook in 1716, and the city served as co-capital of Connecticut until 1873.

Between the traprock ridges of East Rock and West Rock, the harbor is marked by the 1847 Five Mile Point Light at Lighthouse Point, the three churches still frame the Green, and New Haven-style apizza was born here. The Elm City’s four centuries are the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

The Elm City — America's first planned city, nine perfect squares laid out around a green in 1638. New Haven sits on Long Island Sound between the twin traprock ridges of East and West Rock — the Elm City of Connecticut. English Puritans laid it out in 1638 as the first planned city in America, nine squares around the New Haven Green, and within a generation it was hiding the men who had signed a king's death warrant in a cave on West Rock. Co-capital of Connecticut for the better part of two centuries, a Sound port lit by an 1847 brownstone lighthouse, and the birthplace of New Haven-style apizza. This page tells the story of the Elm City.

New Haven's stories run with the harbor and the ridges. They'll tell you the elms once arched right over the streets, which is how the Elm City got its name. They'll tell you about the Great Shippe that sailed for England in 1646 and was never seen again — except, the legend says, as a phantom ship in the clouds over the harbor. They'll point up at West Rock and the regicides' cave, and down at the brownstone lighthouse on the Sound, and then they'll argue, at length, about whose apizza is best.
