The Icelandic Sheepdog. Ears up, tail over the back, all four feet off the ground and a soccer ball one bounce ahead. A dog built for lava fields and sheep in the fog, loose on a Mediterranean beach and making the most of it.
The Icelandic Sheepdog is Iceland's only native breed, a small fox-faced spitz that came over in the longships with the Norse settlers in the ninth century and has herded sheep and ponies across the island ever since. He is close kin to the Norwegian Buhund and the other Nordic spitzes: the pricked triangular ears, the tightly curled plume of a tail, the weatherproof double coat in tan, cream or tricolor with white on the face, chest and feet. Shakespeare knew the type - Pistol in Henry V insults a rival as a prick-eared cur of Iceland. Disease and a ban on imports nearly finished the breed in the twentieth century; it was pulled back from a few dozen dogs in the 1950s, and the American Kennel Club recognized it in 2010. It is still one of the rarer breeds in the world.
