A lobster dinner on the good china, on a working wharf, around 1890. For much of the 1800s that would have raised an eyebrow: lobster was so plentiful along the New England shore that it was cheap, everyday fare. The shingled fish house behind it is right on period.

Clinton's story starts on the water. English colonists settled this stretch of Long Island Sound in 1663 as Kenilworth, and in 1701 the town's own minister, Abraham Pierson, taught the first classes of the college that became Yale in his parsonage here. When the shoreline parish incorporated in 1838 it took the name of DeWitt Clinton. For two centuries the harbor was the economy: shipbuilding, fishing and above all oysters, worked from the Town Dock, with Cedar Island sheltering the anchorage.

The oyster schooners are gone and lobster is no longer cheap, but the Town Dock still works, and a red lobster on a white plate by the harbor is about as Connecticut shoreline as it gets. We drew the fishing village as it might have looked around 1890: wooden lobster pots on the wharf, a lobsterman's dory alongside, a catboat on the mooring.

A three-inch faceted crystal ornament, the art printed on a white backing so the line work stays crisp and the facets catch the light. It comes in a white or gold gift box, ready to give, and is printed to order in the USA. Drawn as an 1880s-style engraving; the lobster is the only color.

For Clinton families, Town Dock regulars, fishermen and anyone who has cracked a lobster by the harbor. Profits support hunger relief.

Clinton holds onto its history with unusual care. The 1789 Stanton House survives as one of Connecticut's notable early house museums; the Clinton Village Historic District along East Main Street — 120 acres of colonial, Federal, and Greek Revival streetscape — joined the National Register in 1994; and Liberty Green, the little triangle where the militia once drilled, still anchors the center. The Historical Society keeps the long story close, the Town Dock still works, and every summer the Bluefish Festival fills the harborfront the way the oyster fleets once did.

Today Clinton wears its history lightly but proudly — an oystering harbor, a colonial Main Street, and the surprising birthplace of Yale, all on the same quiet stretch of the Sound. Its story runs from a Native fishing ground through a colonial harbor and a shipbuilding century to the relaxed shoreline town of today. Wear a little of the town where the college began and the oysters never stopped.

Why People Visit Clinton

Clinton offers the Connecticut shoreline at its most relaxed — a real harbor town with beaches, marinas, and a colonial Main Street, plus the surprising distinction of being where Yale began. Visitors come for the water, the history, and the easy shoreline pace, and stay for the beaches, the harbor, and the oysters.
