The Clinton mug, for the town that is where Yale held its first class. Glossy ceramic with the Clinton vintage retro logo on both sides in black, in 11 oz and 15 oz.

The mug is the desk piece: it says where you are from before you have had the coffee to say it yourself. Dishwasher and microwave safe, so it goes into daily rotation, and at the price of a couple of lattes it is the Clinton gift for colleagues, teachers and hosts.

Glossy ceramic coffee mug with a comfortable C-handle and full-color printed design. Retro logo printed both sides. Durable everyday drinkware for home or office, available in 11 oz (0.33 l) and 15 oz (0.44 l) sizes. Lead- and BPA-free; microwave and dishwasher safe.

Settled in 1663 and named Kenilworth in 1667, Clinton is where the Collegiate School that became Yale held its first classes from 1701 to 1707 in Reverend Abraham Pierson’s parsonage. Adam Stanton built his Federal mansion and general store on that exact site in 1789–91, and the store’s original stock is still inside; the town took its own name in 1838, for DeWitt Clinton of New York.

The 1750 Elisha White House is the oldest brick house on the shoreline between New Haven and New London, Clinton Harbor and the town beach face the Sound at the mouth of the Hammonasset, and Hammonasset Beach State Park lies next door. The mark on this piece is the town where Yale began.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

Clinton holds onto its history with unusual care. The 1789 Stanton House survives as one of Connecticut's notable early house museums; the Clinton Village Historic District along East Main Street — 120 acres of colonial, Federal, and Greek Revival streetscape — joined the National Register in 1994; and Liberty Green, the little triangle where the militia once drilled, still anchors the center. The Historical Society keeps the long story close, the Town Dock still works, and every summer the Bluefish Festival fills the harborfront the way the oyster fleets once did.

Today Clinton wears its history lightly but proudly — an oystering harbor, a colonial Main Street, and the surprising birthplace of Yale, all on the same quiet stretch of the Sound. Its story runs from a Native fishing ground through a colonial harbor and a shipbuilding century to the relaxed shoreline town of today. Wear a little of the town where the college began and the oysters never stopped.

Why People Visit Clinton

Clinton offers the Connecticut shoreline at its most relaxed — a real harbor town with beaches, marinas, and a colonial Main Street, plus the surprising distinction of being where Yale began. Visitors come for the water, the history, and the easy shoreline pace, and stay for the beaches, the harbor, and the oysters.
