The Devil's Den Visitor. Somebody pitched a tent in the wrong woods. A red moon, a canvas tent glowing in the pines, and something very tall, horned and patient, with a basket on his back, leaning in to see who is asleep. A gothic Christmas ornament drawn in the manner of a 1920s devil postcard, crimson and gold on black.
Devil's Den is real. It is a Nature Conservancy preserve in Weston and Redding, Connecticut: hemlock ravines, Godfrey Pond, the Great Ledge, and the old hearths of the charcoal burners who once worked these woods. The name is theirs. They found a mark shaped like a cloven hoof pressed into a rock and decided, sensibly, that the place already had an owner. Hikers are welcome on its trails. Camping is not allowed, and it never has been.
Which is where our legend comes in. On the night of December 5, 1926, the story goes, motorcar campers pitched beside Godfrey Pond, and a visitor out of old Alpine Christmas folklore came down off the Great Ledge to check the naughty list in person. By morning the tents were empty. The children came back, eventually, in noticeably better condition. It is a campfire story, best told in the dark.
The ornament is a three-inch faceted crystal round, printed on a white backing so the crimson, black and antique gold hold their color against the tree lights. The art is our own, drawn in Connecticut after the Christmas devil postcards of the 1920s. It arrives in a white or gold gift box, ready to give, and ships free in the U.S.
For the horror fan, the goth in the family, the white elephant table, or anyone who has been told, more than once, that they are on the list. Profits support hunger relief.
Earlier that evening, before the visitor: Devil's Den Camp Badge.
