Mammoth. A herd of mammoths died together here, and they were found because two men went looking for arrowheads and came back with a bone.

In 1978, near the confluence of the Bosque and Brazos rivers, two locals spotted a large bone eroding from a ravine and took it to Baylor University. Excavation uncovered the remains of a group of Columbian mammoths - the largest known concentration of a single herd that died in one event anywhere in the Americas. The evidence suggests a flood. Among the finds was an adult positioned as if lifting a juvenile, a detail that has stayed with everyone who has heard it. The site became a National Monument in 2015 and the bones remain in the ground, under a roof, where visitors can see them.

Columbian mammoths stood taller than woolly mammoths and roamed this country until roughly ten thousand years ago. Waco's are not a museum display assembled from elsewhere - they are exactly where they fell, which is a very different thing to stand over.

Our Waco logo carries Texas's longhorn and Lone Star above ‘Texas Republic — Est. 1845,’ the shared retro emblem of our Texas towns. The longhorn fits Waco better than almost anywhere — these are the very cattle that crossed the Brazos here by the hundreds of thousands — and the star and 1845 mark Texas's Republic and statehood. For its first decades the Brazos was both the making and the bane of Waco. No bridge crossed the river's eight hundred Texas miles, and the cattle drovers pushing herds north on the Chisholm Trail — the great cattle road blazed in 1864 by the trader Jesse Chisholm — had to ford at Waco's shallow banks or swim their longhorns across. Waco's crossing made it a busy checkpoint between the South Texas ranches and the Kansas railheads, but in flood season the river turned impassable for weeks, and a ferry was the only way over.
