Cannon Square 18-Pounders. Two cannons, pointed out to sea from a small square in a borough of a few thousand people. They are there because in 1814 that was enough.

In August 1814 a British squadron appeared off Stonington and demanded the borough be evacuated, intending to destroy it. The residents refused. What they had were two eighteen-pounders and a limited supply of powder. For three days the town was bombarded and fired back, running short of shot, reportedly firing back the enemy's own. The squadron eventually withdrew. Stonington's houses were damaged, and remarkably few people were killed.

The borough has never quite gotten over it, and should not. The two guns sit in Cannon Square today, and the town's unofficial motto - that it took a village - is the sort of thing that sounds like a slogan until you learn it is a literal description of what happened over three days in August.

Printed on a three-inch faceted crystal glass round, white-backed so the iron and wood detail holds and the evergreen garland reads against tree lights. The faceted edge throws light from every angle. Arrives boxed - white or gold gift box, your choice at checkout.

For the borough family, the history reader, the one who walks past those guns on the way to the point. Merlin Classics profits support hunger relief.

3-inch (76 mm) round crystal glass ornament · faceted gem-cut edge · white-backed print for crisp contrast · red ribbon hanger · your choice of white or gold gift box, included · free U.S. shipping.

Stonington holds more history per square foot than almost any town in America: two defeated navies, a discovered continent, a woven empire of velvet, and a fishing fleet that never stopped. Our Stonington designs gather that identity — the lighthouse, the cannon, the sixteen-star spirit — into wearable form. Quietly outlasting things since 1801.

Industry came ashore in 1888, when the stone American Velvet Mill rose on Bayview Avenue. From 1892 the American Velvet Company wove there for a century, and at its 1950s peak it was the largest velvet producer in the United States — roughly 300 broad looms and 450 workers in a town you can walk end to end. The mill now houses artist studios and makers; the fishing fleet, Connecticut's last, still works the docks below.

Why People Visit Stonington Connecticut

Stonington balances genuine maritime history with preserved coastal village charm most New England towns have lost to tourism. Visitors come for the lighthouse climb, the harbor walks, the Federal-era architecture, the working fishing fleet, and the rare experience of a town that has been quietly itself for over two hundred years. It is photogenic, walkable, and uncrowded compared to neighboring Mystic. History, food, and the salt air sit side by side in a way that rewards a slow afternoon.
