Putnam Camp. Everything about this gateway was arranged to make you look up the lane. Two little log blockhouses, a pair of old cannons, a plain wooden gate - and beyond them, on its rocky rise, the granite obelisk the whole view was built to frame.
In the winter of 1778-79, Major General Israel Putnam's division of the Continental Army went into winter quarters here in Redding - New Hampshire troops under Enoch Poor, Moses Hazen's Canadian regiment, and two Connecticut brigades - placed to guard the Danbury supply depot and back up West Point. The main camp filled this valley: 116 log huts in a double row nearly a quarter mile long, twelve men to a hut, each crew building its own of timber and fieldstone while they shivered in tents until late December. Short of bread, blankets and shoes, one private who was there summed up the season as starving and freezing. Connecticut still calls it its Valley Forge.
The chimneys fell, the woods came back, and for a century the camp was nearly forgotten. In 1887 the state made the ground its first state park, raised the monument the next summer, and in the years that followed built this entrance - blockhouses to recall the frontier forts where young Putnam learned to soldier, surplus Civil War guns at the posts. The historian who planned it insisted it was to be not a pleasure park, but a memorial.
