That winter of 1778-79 Israel Putnam commanded from Redding. Three camps, the Danbury stores behind him, the Sound below, and a division unpaid and close to walking home - he talked the Connecticut brigades back to their huts on the morning of December 30 with a speech and one confined ringleader. From these camps he pushed patrols down to the coast, to Norwalk, Stamford and Horseneck, and it was on that line, in late February, that a British column caught him at Greenwich with a handful of men. The park at his winter camp keeps a bronze of that moment, by Anna Hyatt Huntington, on the visitor-center lawn. This isn't that one.
