For Virginia hunt country, where the holidays begin with hounds. The huntsman in his scarlet coat rides a dappled grey down a snowy lane with the pack fanned out around him and the field following behind, just as it looks when the hunts parade through town in December. For every family with a hunt box in Fauquier or Loudoun, every rider who has heard tally-ho at dawn, and everyone who drives out from the city each year for the holiday parades.

Middleburg calls itself the nation's horse and hunt capital, and on the first Saturday in December its holiday parade brings the local hunts down Washington Street, hounds and scarlet coats and all, between the shop windows and the crowds. Warrenton, Leesburg and Purcellville hold their own holiday parades, and across the Piedmont the hunting season runs right through the holidays.

This is country where the year is told in horse events: the Upperville Colt and Horse Show, held since 1853, the Virginia Gold Cup at Great Meadow in The Plains, point-to-points, hound shows and beagle packs on foot. The National Sporting Library and Museum in Middleburg keeps the art and books of the sport, and stone walls, post-and-rail fences and old hunt boxes line the lanes from Upperville to Waterford.

The drawing is our own, in fine black line like an 1870s sporting engraving, with the scarlet coats and the warm tan of the hounds as the only color. It is set in a three-inch faceted crystal round, printed on a white backing so the lines stay crisp against a lit tree or a farmhouse window.

For Fauquier and Loudoun families, hunt members and hunt-country friends everywhere. Every ornament comes in a white or gold gift box. Profits support hunger relief.
