Putnam's Leap. Horse and rider going straight down a flight of stone steps, sword up, with the pursuit stopped at the top. Everyone who hears the story asks the same first question: could a horse really do that?
Late in the winter of 1779, a column of British regulars caught Israel Putnam with only a handful of men near the shore of Long Island Sound. He was sixty-one, a veteran of the old frontier wars and of Bunker Hill, famous for doing the thing nobody else would. He rode for a hill with a stairway cut into its face, went down it on horseback, and the dragoons behind him pulled up. They fired, they missed, and he rode on to raise the militia.
The leap has been argued over for two and a half centuries: how many steps, how steep, whether it happened quite that way at all. That argument is why it lasts. A story that can be doubted is a story that gets retold.
Our own drawing, set in crystal so the grayscale wash holds under the lights; the Continental coat is the one color. Three inches across, and still steeper than it looks.
