For everyone who grew up hearing that a stawm was comin'. A road crew's message sign stands in the snow outside a white clapboard house, the wreath is on the door, the pines are loaded, and in big red lights the sign says what every Bostonian already knows: WICKED STAWM COMIN'. It is the quiet before the shovels come out, and the perfect ornament for the transplant who misses the accent, the family that still talks about the big ones, and anyone who has bought milk and bread before a forecast.

Around Boston, wicked does the work other places give to very, and the R tends to go missing at the end of a word, so a storm becomes a stawm and a car gets pahked. New Englanders measure their winters by the storms they remember: the Blizzard of 1978 shut down eastern Massachusetts for most of a week in February, and every winter since has been measured against it.

Those orange-and-black message boards on wheels show up on every highway ramp and town road before a big one. This one has been given the local spelling, the way people in Boston have always quietly suspected the road crews were thinking.

The drawing is our own, done in fine black line like an old engraving, with the red lights of the sign and the red bow on the wreath as the only color. It is set in a three-inch faceted crystal round and printed on a white backing so the lines stay crisp against a lit tree or a frosty window.

A wicked good gift for Bostonians at home and away. Every ornament comes in a white or gold gift box. Profits support hunger relief.
