The Pāʻia tank, for the town that is Maui’s bohemian sugar town. Lightweight Airlume cotton jersey with the Pāʻia vintage retro logo on the chest in white, for the hottest months of the year.

The tank is the summer Pāʻia piece: light enough for the trail, the boat and the porch, cut in a retail unisex fit that runs true to size. Order it before the warm weather does the deciding for you.

Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton gives this lightweight unisex tank its soft jersey feel. The retail fit runs true to size for adults, with side-seam construction, self-fabric binding, and a tear-away label. Solid colors are 100% cotton and select heather/prism shades may include cotton–poly or cotton–poly–rayon blends.

Pāʻia was founded in the 1880s as an Alexander & Baldwin plantation town, by 1892 among the largest sugar plantations in the world, drawing workers from across the Pacific; the Mantokuji Zen mission was established by the sea in 1906 and the mill ran until 2000. The low false-front wooden storefronts of the main street are still there.

After sugar the town became a hippie haven in the 1960s and 70s, then the Windsurfing Capital of the World when Hoʻokipa’s winds and waves were discovered in the 1980s; Jaws breaks just beyond, and the Hāna Highway begins at the edge of town under Haleakalā. Where the trade winds blow is the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

Then the wind found it. Just two miles east at Hoʻokipa, the relentless trade winds and reef break combine into some of the most consistent windsurfing conditions on earth, and through the 1980s and 1990s the pioneers of the sport set up shop in town and made Pāʻia known the world over as the "Windsurfing Capital of the World." The same winds now draw kitesurfers and foilers too. The giant winter wave at Jaws (Peʻahi) lies just beyond, and green sea turtles haul out to rest on the sand at Hoʻokipa — watched, by law, from a respectful distance. And all the while Pāʻia kept its oldest job: the last town to gas up, grab food and turn east onto the 64-mile Road to Hāna.

It found that life in the counterculture. Through the 1960s and 1970s a wave of artists, surfers and free spirits drifted in and claimed the sleepy sugar town as their unofficial capital. The pastel storefronts filled with galleries, boutiques and a now-legendary natural-foods market on Baldwin Avenue; on the one main street, old-school hippies, professional surfers and new-age wanderers brushed shoulders. The vibe turned barefoot and bohemian, a slice of the Summer of Love frozen on a Hawaiian shore. Pāʻia became "the hippest little town on Maui," and the easygoing, salt-tousled feel from those years never left.

Why People Visit Pāʻia

Pāʻia offers a whole mood in one small town: bohemian, barefoot charm, world-class wind and surf, and the romance of the open road to Hāna. It is the coolest little town on Maui — and for the artists, surfers and free spirits who live here, simply home, the place where old Maui still feels like itself.
