The Niantic tank, for the town that is the point of land on the water. Lightweight Airlume cotton jersey with the Niantic vintage retro logo on the chest in black, for the hottest months of the year.

The tank is the summer Niantic piece: light enough for the trail, the boat and the porch, cut in a retail unisex fit that runs true to size. Order it before the warm weather does the deciding for you.

Unisex jersey tank made from lightweight Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton with a retail fit. Side-seam construction and self-fabric binding help it hold shape, with a tear-away label, and it runs true to size for adults. Solid colors are 100% cotton; select heather/prism shades may include cotton–poly or cotton–poly–rayon blends.

The Nehantic named this shore for the point of land on the water, and the English settled it in the mid-1600s as part of Lyme. The Shore Line Railway of 1851 turned the stretch once called The Bank into a summer village, and the 1845 Smith-Harris House and 1685 Samuel Smith House survive from the farming years.

Today the Book Barn’s stacks ramble on for buildings, the boardwalk runs a mile along Niantic Bay beside the rails, nine beach communities line the shore, and Rocky Neck State Park is next door. Salt air, used books and Long Island Sound are the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

Our Niantic logo carries Connecticut's oyster above ‘Connecticut — Est. 1636,’ the shared retro emblem of our Connecticut towns. The oyster is the state shellfish, a fitting nod to the beds that the Nehantic and the early settlers worked in this bay, and 1636 marks the founding of the Connecticut Colony; the emblem is the through-line that links Niantic to every other Connecticut town we make. It could hardly fit a place better — an oystering shore village — rendered in the black-and-white of an old crate label. What makes this one Niantic is the bay behind it: the boardwalk, the beaches, and the train.

What changed Niantic was the train. The Shore Line Railway reached the shore in 1851, and almost at once ‘The Bank’ began turning into Niantic, a summer-resort village. The rails made the beaches a half-day from New York or Boston, and cottage colonies sprang up all along the shore — Crescent Beach, Black Point, Giants Neck, Hole-in-the-Wall, a whole string of little beach communities. A drawbridge carried the tracks over the mouth of the Niantic River, and the sound of the shoreline train became part of summer here, as it still is.

Why People Visit Niantic

Niantic offers straightforward coastal time for families. Visitors mix boardwalk walks with park picnics, beach days, and small museums, all on Long Island Sound. It is easygoing, scenic, and walkable, with year-round appeal in its parks, paths, and public spaces. The vintage feel of a New England beach village is evergreen, and history and everyday shoreline life sit side by side here in a welcoming way.
