The New London tank, for the town that was the whaling city on the Thames. Lightweight Airlume cotton jersey with the New London vintage retro logo on the chest in black, for the hottest months of the year.

The tank is the summer New London piece: light enough for the trail, the boat and the porch, cut in a retail unisex fit that runs true to size. Order it before the warm weather does the deciding for you.

A retail-fit unisex tank in lightweight Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton. Side seams and self-fabric binding help it hold its shape, the label tears away, and it runs true to size for adults. Solids are 100% cotton; select heather and prism shades may include cotton–poly or cotton–poly–rayon blends.

John Winthrop the Younger settled New London in 1646 at one of the best deep-water harbors on Long Island Sound, and the first shipyard opened in 1651. Its privateers took more than five hundred British ships in the Revolution; on September 6, 1781, Benedict Arnold’s raid burned more than 140 buildings, and the city rebuilt.

By the early 1800s it was the second-busiest whaling port in the world, and whaling money built its mansions. The 1801 Harbor Light and the Ledge Light mark the river mouth, Eugene O’Neill spent boyhood summers at Monte Cristo Cottage, the Amistad landed at the 1833 Custom House, and the Coast Guard Academy trains on the barque Eagle. The mark on this piece is the whaling city.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

New London keeps two seafaring identities at once. There is the whaling city — Whale Oil Row, the old harbor, the 1833 Custom House, and the lights that still guide ships in: New London Harbor Light, raised in 1801 and the oldest and tallest lighthouse in Connecticut, and the offshore Ledge Light of 1909, square on its house out in the channel. And there is the Coast Guard city — the academy on the Thames, the cadets, and the Eagle standing out under sail, one of the last great square-riggers flying the American flag. Between them runs the Thames itself, with the ferries pulling out for Orient Point and Block Island, the Amtrak trains along the waterfront, and the working harbor that has defined the place since 1646.

Today New London is a working harbor city and a college and Coast Guard town, proud of its whaling past, its academy, and its place at the mouth of the Thames on Long Island Sound. Its story runs from the Pequot shore and Winthrop's 1646 founding through the 1781 burning, the whaling boom that made it the world's second-busiest whaling port, and the arrival of the Coast Guard Academy and the Eagle. Our New London designs gather that identity into wearable form — the whaleship, the oyster shell, the Coast Guard, the deep harbor. New London, Connecticut — the Whaling City on the Thames.
