What’s with the sardines? Cannery Row packed sardines from 1902 until the fish vanished around 1950, and Monterey was the Sardine Capital of the World. Before that it was California’s first capital, the adobe town where the state wrote its first constitution. Our retro Monterey, California logo carries both Montereys: the cannery tin and the deep blue bay.

This is the Monterey mug: our retro Monterey, California logo printed in black on both sides of a glossy ceramic coffee mug, the hand-lettered vintage type reading like an old crate label from the Row. It is a morning-fog mug, built for a kitchen window on the bay or a desk a thousand miles from it, with no slogan and no cartoon otter, just the town. One of the easier Monterey gifts to get right.

Monterey history runs older than the state. Sebastián Vizcaíno named the harbor for the Count of Monte Rey in 1602; Gaspar de Portolá and Father Junípero Serra founded the Monterey presidio and its mission on June 3, 1770, on land the Rumsen Ohlone had lived on for thousands of years. Named capital of Alta California in 1777, the adobe town governed California for Spain and then Mexico until the American flag rose in 1846, and in 1849 delegates met at Colton Hall to write the state’s first constitution. The Royal Presidio Chapel of 1794, the 1827 Custom House (California Historical Landmark Number One) and the Larkin House still stand along the Path of History, which is why Monterey is called the adobe capital of California. Even Monterey Jack is local: the registry lists California’s first marketed cheese here in 1859, under the name of rancher David Jacks.

The second Monterey was built on fish. The first cannery opened in 1902, and by the 1930s the waterfront was the Sardine Capital of the World, the Cannery Row that John Steinbeck made famous, though the real one smelled of fish oil and steam. Around 1950 the sardines simply stopped coming, the canneries closed, and the Row sat quiet until the old Hovden cannery was reborn in 1984 as a place to look at the bay instead of canning it. Today Cannery Row history is the draw, along with sea otters in the kelp, the sea lions on the Coast Guard pier, whale watching on Monterey Bay, the coastal trail past the old Fisherman’s Wharf, and Point Lobos just down the coast. Area code 831, fog over the pines, and a bay deep enough to hide a canyon: that is the Monterey on this logo. Read the full Monterey history behind the design.

The mug is glossy ceramic with a comfortable C-handle and a full-color print of the black logo on both sides, available in 11 oz and 15 oz. It is lead- and BPA-free, microwave and dishwasher safe, and built for daily use at home or the office. A Monterey souvenir that gets used every morning. We are the Monterey gift shop that never closes: Monterey apparel and Monterey Bay souvenirs drawn in-house, not bought by the pallet. As with everything we make, profits support hunger relief.

South of town the land turns wild at Point Lobos, the granite-and-cypress headland often called the crown jewel of California's state parks, where sea otters raft in the kelp and the surf breaks white against the rocks. Monterey Bay itself is a drowned submarine canyon — deep, cold, and astonishingly rich with life — which is why the old Hovden cannery at the end of the Row was reborn in 1984 as a place to look at the sea instead of empty it. The same water that built the canneries now draws people to watch whales and otters in it.

From the room where California wrote its constitution to the canneries that fed the bay, Monterey is the original California — adobe walls, cannery tin, and the deep blue water that ran through all of it. Our Monterey designs gather that layered history into wearable form. From California's first capital to the Sardine Capital of the World: wear a little of Monterey's original-California history.
