The Haleakalā fleece, for the mountain that is the House of the Sun. An authentic Columbia MTR fleece, full-zip, with the Haleakalā vintage retro logo embroidered on the chest in white thread.

This is the top of the Haleakalā range: a real Columbia blank, embroidered to order, warm, light and fast-drying. It is the jacket for early mornings, the sideline and the drive home, and the Haleakalā gift that gets opened and put on immediately. Made to order, so allow the embroidery time before the holidays.

This full-zip fleece is embroidered to order on an authentic Columbia blank made from Columbia’s soft, warm MTR fleece (~7.4 oz/yd² MTR-style filament fleece), with our vintage-retro logo cleanly stitched on the chest. Warm but lightweight, with an athletic, easy-layering fit, a stand collar, and clean lines, it offers dependable insulation for cool days, dries fast, and moves comfortably for walks, errands, travel, or campfire nights. Care: machine wash cold (gentle), dry flat, no bleach, no iron on decoration, no dry clean. Since embroidery uses thread (not ink), slight differences from the digital product image are normal and part of the process; full details and care instructions are explained in the page footer Embroidery note. Haleakalā, the House of the Sun, is the dormant shield volcano that forms more than three-quarters of Maui, rising from the sea to 10,023 feet at Puʻu ʻUlaʻula. Native Hawaiians have used the summit for at least a thousand years and hold it sacred as the Wao Akua, the place of the gods, where the demigod Māui snared the sun; the last eruption came between 1480 and 1600.

Hawaiʻi National Park took in the mountain on August 1, 1916, and Haleakalā became its own national park in 1961. The seven-mile summit depression, carved by erosion where two valleys met, is 2,600 feet deep, and the silversword grows nowhere else on Earth. Above the clouds is the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

What’s with the Longer Days of Haleakalā? Stand on the summit and the day really does feel stretched — sunrise arrives over a sea of clouds, sunset lingers, and the light seems in no hurry at all. In the oldest stories, this is exactly as promised: the demigod Māui stood at this rim and snared the sun, winning its word to walk more slowly across the sky so that his mother Hina’s kapa cloth could dry. The name is the promise kept — Haleakalā, the House of the Sun — and every morning, in the cold thin air at ten thousand feet, the sun still rises slowly over the House built for it.

Our Haleakalā retro logo uses the Hawaiian hibiscus motif, the brand-wide flower of every Merlin Classics Hawaiʻi town, paired with the inscription "Hawaiian Kingdom — Est. 1795," referencing the unification of the islands under Kamehameha I at the Battle of Nuʻuanu. The black-and-white styling is retro, resembling vintage travel decals or crate labels. The motif honors Haleakalā's place inside the broader Hawaiʻi heritage frame, and pairs the kingdom-era anchor with the mountain that has been here since long before any flag flew over the islands. On merchandise the emblem conveys reverence, pride, and continuity, retro in tone, and connects Haleakalā to the family of Merlin Classics Hawaiʻi pages with one shared design language.

Why People Visit Haleakalā

Haleakalā offers a different Hawaiʻi — above the clouds, where the air is thin, the silence carries, and the sun rises over an ocean of mist at six in the morning. Travelers come for the sunrise at Puʻu ʻUlaʻula, the silversword on the upper slopes, the long hike down into the crater on Sliding Sands, the bamboo-forest walk to Waimoku Falls at Kīpahulu, the Pools of ʻOheʻo cascading down to the sea, and the dark-sky stargazing from the summit at night. It is contemplative, otherworldly, and unforgettable — a sacred mountain that has been holding sky over east Hawaiʻi for as long as anyone has counted.
