The Great Pyrenees. A hundred pounds of white coat standing on a pebble beach under a red-and-white parasol, tongue out, entirely at home. Of all the dogs in our South of France series, this is the one who actually lives here.
The Great Pyrenees is the old livestock guardian of the mountains that give him his name, bred for centuries by Basque and Bearnese shepherds to sleep among the flock by day and walk the fold line at night, facing down wolves and bears alone. The breed carries its work in its build: the double dewclaws on the hind legs, the thick weatherproof double coat, the badger-marked head, and the low, steady bark that goes on all night because that is the job. He was the guardian of the great chateaux of the southwest, and in 1675 the court of Louis XIV named him the Royal Dog of France. The British call him the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, the French registry the Chien de Montagne des Pyrénées; in the villages he is simply the patou. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1933.
