A scruffy brown dog on a downtown corner beside his own doghouse, BROWNIE painted over the door. Daytona's most beloved citizen, who happened to be a stray.

Brownie turned up on Beach Street in 1939 and never left. The cab drivers fed him, the bank opened an account in his name, the city gave him a license tag and the merchants built him a doghouse. He walked the corner for fifteen years, and when he died in 1954 seventy-five people came to the funeral and the mayor gave the eulogy.

He is buried in Riverfront Park, a few yards from his corner. The plaque calls him a good dog, which was the whole of his résumé and all anyone needed.

Daytona is known for speed and spring break. Brownie is the slower, kinder Daytona, and the one locals bring up first when they want you to understand the town. The red collar is for him.

Brownie the town dog lived on Beach Street for fifteen years and is still one of America's famous dogs. This dog ornament is a Daytona Beach Christmas ornament built on Daytona Beach history, a Daytona Beach souvenir for anyone who loves a good stray dog story.

3-inch faceted crystal glass ornament, white-backed print, line-drawn in 1880s engraving style, your choice of white or gold gift box.

Every Daytona Beach ornament ships ready to give, and profits support hunger relief. Hang it on the tree, in a window, off a lamp, or send one to the person who misses Daytona Beach most.

Our Daytona Beach logo carries Florida's alligator over "Florida Territory · Est. 1845," the year Florida joined the Union as the twenty-seventh state — the shared emblem of every Merlin Classics Florida place. Printed black-and-white with the worn look of an old crate stamp or woodcut, the gator reads as wild, sun-bleached Florida. What makes this one Daytona is the story behind it — the most famous beach, and the birthplace of speed.

Off the sand, Daytona kept the easy rhythm of a classic Florida beach resort: the boardwalk and Main Street Pier, the coquina-rock Bandshell built on the oceanfront in 1937, the long Atlantic "Fun Coast," and the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse standing watch to the south. It's the vintage-postcard Florida of wide beaches, sea air, and summer afternoons by the water.
