The Westbrook polo, for the town that is where the submarine was born. Soft ring-spun cotton pique with the Westbrook vintage retro logo embroidered on the chest in black thread: hometown pride that passes at the office.

Choose the polo when a t-shirt is too casual and a logo too loud: the embroidered crest reads as a club mark, so it works for golf, a summer dinner or a workday. It is the Westbrook gift for fathers, grooms and anyone who already owns too many tees.

A clean, semi-fitted pique polo in soft 100% ring-spun cotton (~5.2 oz/yd²) with our vintage-retro logo embroidered on the chest. Side-seamed construction and a classic 2-button placket with dyed-to-match buttons keep it sharp yet easy for work, golf, or weekends. Breathable, lightweight fabric is comfortable in warm weather; advanced fabric certification adds peace of mind. Care: machine wash cold (gentle), tumble dry low, no bleach, do not iron decoration, no dry clean. Because embroidery uses thread (not ink), slight differences from the digital product image are normal and part of the process. Full details explained in our Embroidery footer.

Settled around 1648 as the Oyster River Quarter of Saybrook, Westbrook became a parish in 1724, took its name in 1810 and incorporated in 1840. In 1775 a farmer’s son from this town, David Bushnell, built the Turtle while at Yale, the first submarine ever used in combat, in New York Harbor in 1776; the Navy still credits him as a father of submarine warfare.

White oak and chestnut from the hills fed a century of shipbuilding, the Salt Island menhaden works ran through the 1800s, and the summer resort era began in the 1870s. Four miles of beaches, the Pochaug and Menunketesuck salt marshes and Duck Island face the Sound. The mark on this piece is the Turtle’s hometown.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

For a century Westbrook lived by the water — shipyards built from the white oak and chestnut of the local forests, oyster beds in the tidal rivers, and a menhaden fish-oil works out on Salt Island off Middle Beach. The Pochaug and Patchogue rivers share a single mouth here, spreading into broad salt marshes, with Duck Island and its breakwater offshore. By the 1870s the same shoreline had become a summer resort, its cottages filling each season with visitors drawn to the Sound.

Today Westbrook is a quiet Long Island Sound town of about seven thousand — salt marshes and a common river mouth, masts in the harbor at Pilots Point, the town green on the old Boston Post Road, and the Town Center Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017, that records three centuries of shoreline New England. Greek Revival and colonial homes along the old road still carry the markers of the "Descendants of Westbrook Settlers," and out in the marsh the cedar rise of Hawk's Nest keeps the shoreline's older geography in view. It is a town that wears its history lightly — and has more of it than almost anyone passing through would guess.

Why People Visit Westbrook

Westbrook offers quiet shoreline New England with a remarkable story beneath it. Visitors come for the beaches, the marsh and harbor, the historic town center, and the distinction of standing in the birthplace of the submarine. It's low-key, scenic, and steeped in Long Island Sound maritime heritage.
