The Wailea tank, for the town that is the waters of Lea. Lightweight Airlume cotton jersey with the Wailea vintage retro logo on the chest in black, for the hottest months of the year.

The tank is the summer Wailea piece: light enough for the trail, the boat and the porch, cut in a retail unisex fit that runs true to size. Order it before the warm weather does the deciding for you.

Lightweight Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton jersey in a retail fit that runs true to size for adults. Side-seam construction and self-fabric binding keep the shape, and the label is tear-away. Solid colors are 100% cotton, while select heather/prism shades may include cotton–poly or cotton–poly–rayon blends.

The Hawaiians named this South Maui shore for Lea, the goddess of canoe-builders, who legend says flew over the coast as a forest bird and blessed its waters. It was a fishing ground for five hundred years along Piʻilani’s King’s Highway, cattle country after the Great Mahele of 1848, and a Marine amphibious training beach in the Second World War.

Matson bought the land in 1957 and the resort community was master-planned from 1971 around five crescent beaches, Mokapu, Ulua, Wailea, Polo and Keawakapu, at the dry, sunny foot of Haleakalā, looking across to Kahoʻolawe, Molokini and Lānaʻi, with humpbacks offshore each winter. The waters of Lea are the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

What’s with the goddess of canoe-builders? Wailea’s name is, quite literally, her water — wai o Lea, the water of Lea, the goddess Hawaiian canoe-makers prayed to before they felled a koa tree and shaped its trunk into a hull. She is remembered too as a guardian of the hula, and one tradition says she turned this stretch of shore into a forest so lovely she would fly above it just to admire the birds. So when you stand on the warm leeward sand here, you are standing in a place named for the patron of master craftsmen — not a resort slogan, but an old prayer carried in three syllables.

The outside world arrived from the south. In 1786 the French navigator La Pérouse became the first European known to set foot on Maui, stepping ashore at Keoneʻōʻio — the lava bay just below Wailea that still carries his name. Across the ʻAlalakeiki channel lay Kahoʻolawe, and behind it the dry Honuaʻula coast watched the first foreign sails pass. For a while little changed: the fishing shore stayed a fishing shore, and the goddess’s water kept running to the same reef.

Why People Visit Wailea, Hawaiʻi

Wailea offers a seamless beach-and-path experience: swimming, snorkeling, strolling, and light shopping between coves. It is sunny, refined, and family friendly, with year-round appeal in its beaches, walkways, and public access. Natural beauty and easy comfort sit side by side, and a deep Hawaiian past — the goddess Lea, the fishing shore of Kahamanini, the Marines’ “Little Tarawa” — runs quietly beneath the polish.
