The Waikīkī hoodie, for the town that is where Hawaiian kings surfed. A medium-heavy cotton pullover with the Waikīkī vintage retro logo across the chest in black, made to be worn from the first cold morning to the last.

If you are buying one Waikīkī piece, this is the one that gets worn most: warm enough for the sideline, the dock and the drive home, and the hoodie that gets borrowed and never returned. It is the gift for the one who moved away from Waikīkī, and the one that arrives in time for the holidays if you order now.

A medium-heavy fleece pullover hoodie built for warmth that lasts. The regular, true-to-size adult fit comes with a three-panel hood, ribbed cuffs and waistband, and double-needle stitching where it counts, plus a tear-away label. 80% combed ring-spun cotton / 20% polyester; heather shades may be cotton–poly blends.

Waikīkī was a royal retreat of taro fields and fishponds where Hawaiian aliʻi surfed the long rolling reef waves from the 1400s, and the monarchy’s retreat after Kamehameha I moved his seat to Honolulu in 1809. The Moana opened in 1901 as the First Lady of Waikīkī, Duke Kahanamoku carried surfing to the world from about 1910, and the rose-pink Royal Hawaiian followed in 1927.

The Ala Wai Canal of 1928 drained the wetlands and the two-mile crescent of south-shore beach took its modern shape beneath Diamond Head, with six named beaches and gentle waves made for longboards. The golden age of aloha is the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

That second life had a price. To drain the wetlands — officially against mosquitoes, in practice to turn marsh into buildable land — the territory dug the Ala Wai Canal between 1921 and 1928, diverting the very streams that had given Waikīkī its name. The taro patches and fishponds were filled, the Hawaiian families who farmed them displaced, and the spouting waters stilled. What rose in their place was the modern resort district the world now knows — built, quite literally, over the drained breadbasket of old Waikīkī.

For centuries Waikīkī was the playground of the aliʻi, who rode its long, gentle waves on koa-wood longboards — heʻe nalu, the sport of kings, born on these very shoulders of surf. It was a seat of power, too. In 1794 Kamehameha landed his war canoes on this beach in the campaign that would unite the islands, and after his victory Waikīkī served as the young Kingdom's first capital, in 1795 and 1796. He built a home at Helumoa and, in 1809, moved his court here — to the same grove where the Pink Palace stands today.

Why People Visit Waikīkī

Waikīkī offers a whole world in two miles of sand: the birthplace of modern surfing, royal history beneath the hotels, Diamond Head at the end of the beach, and the easy warmth of Hawaiian hospitality. It is the most famous beach in the Pacific — and for the surfers, paddlers, and families who live and gather here, simply home.
