An orange tomcat sitting on the general-store counter beside a water glass with a straw and a brass bell with a red bow, a snowy mountain in the window. Stubbs, honorary mayor.

Stubbs was elected honorary mayor of Talkeetna in 1997, as the story goes, by write-in, and held the office for twenty years. He slept on the counter of the general store, took his water from a wine glass with catnip in it, and received visitors from around the world who came to meet the mayor. He died in 2017 at twenty, still in office.

Talkeetna is the jumping-off town for Denali and has a reputation for doing things its own way. A cat in charge fit perfectly.

A town that elects a cat has a sense of humor about government that most towns could use. The orange fur and the red bow are the color; the glass of water is his.

Stubbs the cat, Mayor Stubbs, was the Talkeetna cat mayor for twenty years, and visitors came from around the world to meet him. This orange cat ornament is a cat ornament and Alaska ornament, one of the best cat lover gifts and a Talkeetna, Alaska souvenir.

Every Talkeetna ornament ships ready to give. Hang it on the tree, in a window, off a lamp, or send one to the person who misses Talkeetna most.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

Our Talkeetna retro logo uses Alaska's distressed bear motif, representing toughness, wilderness, and endurance. The bear reflects both Indigenous reverence and frontier survival, while "1959" ties the design to Alaska's statehood. Its black-and-white styling is rugged and retro, resembling crate stamps or outfitter branding. The motif bridges Talkeetna's dual identity: Native heritage and frontier railroad town. On merchandise, it conveys authenticity and pride, retro vintage in tone. The bear emblem honors Talkeetna's layered story, making it a vintage symbol of Alaska resilience. It reflects survival, community, and heritage, capturing Alaska's story of continuity and pride.

So Talkeetna gathers a Dena’ina name for joining rivers, a gold-rush landing, an eighty-lot railroad auction, a log Main Street on the National Register, the ranger station where every Denali expedition begins, ski-planes bound for a glacier, and a mayor who purrs — and our Talkeetna designs pack all of it into wearable form. Whether Talkeetna is your hometown, your basecamp, your flag-stop, or the town you promised yourself you’d get back to, wear the history. Below Denali since 1896.

Why People Visit Talkeetna Alaska

Talkeetna offers the three-rivers confluence the Dena'ina have gathered at for centuries, the National Register downtown with the Roadhouse and Nagley's and the Fairview Inn intact and operating, the Walter Harper Ranger Station that every Denali climber walks through, the long view of the highest mountain in North America rising at the head of the Susitna Valley, the Alaska Railroad Denali Star at the depot daily, and the small-plane glacier-landing tradition that opened the mountain to the world. It is a small town at the end of a fourteen-mile spur road, and almost every climber on Denali has stood on its one main street first. Below Denali since 1896.
