A trapeze bar with two chalked hands gripping it, swinging high under the peak of a big top. Sarasota has been a circus town for a century.

The circus moved its winter quarters to Sarasota in 1927, and the performers moved in with it. Aerialists, clowns and animal trainers bought houses, and their kids went to the local schools, which is why the city has had a youth circus since 1949 and why a trapeze in a backyard here is not unusual. The circus left in 1959. The families did not.

The circus museum is here, the youth circus still performs, and the names on the mailboxes in some neighborhoods are circus names.

Looking up at a trapeze is how every circus kid remembers it. The red tape on the bar is the holiday touch, and the hands belong to someone from Sarasota.

Sarasota is Circus City: the Sarasota circus wintered here for decades, and the circus trapeze is still in backyards and the youth circus. This trapeze ornament is a circus ornament and Sarasota Christmas ornament, a piece of circus history and Sarasota history for Christmas in Sarasota.

3-inch faceted crystal glass ornament, white-backed print, line-drawn in 1880s engraving style, your choice of white or gold gift box.

Every Sarasota ornament ships ready to give, and profits support hunger relief. Hang it on the tree, in a window, off a lamp, or send one to the person who misses Sarasota most.

Our Sarasota logo carries Florida's alligator over "1845," the year Florida joined the Union — the shared emblem of every Merlin Classics Florida place. Printed black-and-white with the worn look of an old crate label or a woodcut stamp, the gator reads as Florida in shorthand: subtropical, sun-baked, and a little wild. What makes this one Sarasota is the place behind it — the circus capital, the palace on the bay, the museum, and the white sand of the keys.

Long before the circus arrived, Sarasota was a small settlement on the bay — pioneer families farming and fishing the Gulf shore, joined by a colony of Scots in 1885. The town incorporated in 1902 and grew slowly along the waterfront. Then came the 1920s, and a circus magnate with a fortune and a vision, and everything about the place changed.
