The Santa Monica cap, for the town that is where Route 66 meets the Pacific. An unstructured cotton dad cap with the Santa Monica vintage retro logo embroidered on the front in white thread.

The cap is the easiest Santa Monica piece to wear every day and the easiest to give: one size, breathable cotton, a curved visor and an antique-brass buckle. It softens with wear and stays on the hook by the door. Order one for the beach bag and one for the glovebox.

This unisex dad cap is made from breathable cotton in a low-profile, unstructured 6-panel shape with a Permacurv visor. A self-fabric hideaway strap with antique-brass buckle adjusts the fit, and a matching undervisor and four-row visor stitching add durability. The embroidered finish is classic and vintage-inspired. All colors 100% cotton; camo is 65% polyester / 35% cotton. Because embroidery uses thread (not ink), slight differences from the digital product image are normal and part of the process — see our Embroidery footer for full details.

Senator John P. Jones of Nevada and Colonel Robert S. Baker founded Santa Monica on July 10, 1875, as a seaside resort, donated Palisades Park on the bluff the same year, and the city incorporated on November 30, 1886. A mile-long wharf served as Los Angeles’s port from 1893 to 1903, and the Pier opened in 1909, the last of the bay’s amusement piers.

Route 66 runs 2,448 miles from Chicago and stops at that wooden pier, where the Ferris wheel runs on sunlight and the 1922 Looff Hippodrome houses the carousel; Douglas Aircraft was founded here in 1921 and the first round-the-world flight set out from Clover Field in 1924. Three and a half miles of beach and the bluffs are the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

The waterfront made the city famous. A string of amusement piers rose along the bay in the resort decades, and of them all, the 1909 Santa Monica Pier is the one that survived — the municipal pier and its pleasure-pier twin, carrying the 1916 Looff Hippodrome, a National Historic Landmark whose hand-carved carousel horses still circle under the old dome. Pacific Park's rides came later; the wooden deck, the anglers at the rail, and the long walk over the water are the originals.

Santa Monica as a town dates to 1875, when a Nevada silver senator, John P. Jones, and a ranching colonel, Robert Baker, laid it out as a seaside resort — a "Pearl of the Pacific" they hoped would become Los Angeles's great port. Jones built his railroad and his mile-long wharf, and for a time the port dream was real: Santa Monica served as the region's port of call into the early 1900s, until San Pedro took the harbor trade for good. The city incorporated in 1886 and kept the better inheritance — the beach.

Why People Visit Santa Monica

Santa Monica rewards visitors with a rare mix — a historic amusement pier, the western end of Route 66, miles of state beach, and one of America's great walking downtowns, all on a bright Pacific bay. People come for the pier and the End of the Trail, and stay for the sunsets off the bluffs and the easy, salt-aired grace of California's beach city.
