The Santa Barbara tank, for the town that is the American Riviera. Lightweight Airlume cotton jersey with the Santa Barbara vintage retro logo on the chest in black, for the hottest months of the year.

The tank is the summer Santa Barbara piece: light enough for the trail, the boat and the porch, cut in a retail unisex fit that runs true to size. Order it before the warm weather does the deciding for you.

Unisex jersey tank made from lightweight Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton with a retail fit. Side-seam construction and self-fabric binding help it hold shape, with a tear-away label, and it runs true to size for adults. Solid colors are 100% cotton; select heather/prism shades may include cotton–poly or cotton–poly–rayon blends.

Mission Santa Barbara, the Queen of the Missions, was founded in 1786, and the city incorporated in 1850. When the 1925 earthquake leveled much of downtown, Santa Barbara rebuilt from a single architectural rulebook, whitewashed stucco and red tile mandated city-wide, and the 1929 County Courthouse that came out of it is counted among the most beautiful public buildings in America.

Stearns Wharf of 1872 is the oldest working wooden wharf in California, the Santa Ynez Mountains stand behind State Street, and the Channel Islands lie offshore across the Santa Barbara Channel. The American Riviera is the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

The twentieth century filled in the picture: the Santa Barbara Bowl opened in its sandstone canyon in 1936, the university arrived in 1944, and Old Spanish Days has filled the streets with dancers and riders every August since 1924. East Beach and West Beach meet at the wharf, the harbor shelters the fishing fleet behind its breakwater, and the dolphins — real ones — still work the channel the way the Chumash stories always said they did: going around, protecting, going in peace.

Our Santa Barbara retro logo uses California's bear and star motif, the brand-wide California emblem of every Merlin Classics CA town, symbolic of state pride and resilience. The bear embodies strength, independence, and wilderness heritage, while the star recalls the Bear Flag and California Republic spirit. The "1850" inscription ties the design to California statehood — the brand-pattern anchor across our California towns, regardless of each town's specific founding date. Black-and-white styling resembles WPA travel posters, citrus crate labels, or frontier signage, retro and practical. The motif bridges Santa Barbara's layered story: Chumash and Spanish roots, Mexican rancho era, American resilience, and the legislated post-1925 architectural identity. On merchandise, it communicates authenticity and endurance, retro vintage in tone, perfectly suited for honoring this American Riviera city.

Why People Visit Santa Barbara

  • Tour Mission Santa Barbara, the 1786 Queen of the Missions, the tenth of the California missions and the only one in continuous Franciscan use — the 1820 twin-towered stone façade, the Sacred Garden, the cemetery, the mission museum.
  • Climb the Santa Barbara County Courthouse El Mirador clock tower for the free panoramic view across the red-tile roofs to the Channel and the islands; tour the 1929 sandstone Spanish Colonial Revival interior with the painted Mural Room ceiling.
  • Walk through El Presidio Real de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park, the 1782 Spanish fort site downtown — one of the four original Spanish presidios in California, now a partial reconstruction with the original Cañedo Adobe and El Cuartel still standing.
  • Walk Stearns Wharf, the 1872 wooden wharf running out into the harbor — the oldest working wooden wharf in California — for shops, the Sea Center aquarium, and views back to the city against the Santa Ynez Mountains.
  • Stroll State Street, the historic downtown spine of the post-1925 rebuild, lined block after block with whitewashed stucco, red tile, arches, courtyards, and ironwork.
  • Visit El Paseo, the 1922 Spanish courtyard complex built around the 1819 Casa de la Guerra adobe — the architectural prototype that helped shape the post-1925 rebuild rulebook.
  • Walk East Beach and West Beach, the long Channel-front sands either side of Stearns Wharf, and out to Butterfly Beach in Montecito for the south-facing afternoon light.
  • Drive up to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden in Mission Canyon, with native California plant collections and trails through the chaparral above the mission.
  • Stroll the Santa Barbara Museum of Art on State Street for rotating exhibits in a 1914 Spanish-revival building.
  • Catch a show at the Santa Barbara Bowl, the 1936 hillside amphitheater above downtown — one of the oldest outdoor concert venues in California.
  • Take the Channel Islands ferry from the harbor out to Santa Cruz or Anacapa Island in the Channel Islands National Park, the rugged offshore archipelago the Chumash called Limuw, Anyapakh, and Tuqan.
  • Time a visit for Old Spanish Days Fiesta in early August — the city's signature five-day annual festival of Spanish Colonial and Mexican-rancho heritage centered on the courthouse Sunken Garden.
