A Moreton Bay fig with buttress roots spreading like walls, a tiny figure standing in them for scale, a red bow on a low branch. The biggest fig tree in America, planted by a sailor.

In 1876 a sailor gave a seedling from Australia to a girl in Santa Barbara, who planted it. It is now the largest Moreton Bay fig in the country, with a canopy 175 feet across and roots that rise higher than a person. It stands by the train station, so it is the first thing many visitors see and the thing locals use to tell them they have arrived.

The tree has outlived everyone involved in planting it and most of the buildings around it. The city fenced the roots to keep people from carving them.

A tree that big from a seed that small is the kind of story a town keeps. The bow on the branch is the only color on a piece that is all shade.

The Moreton Bay fig tree by the station is the big fig tree of Santa Barbara landmarks, and every visitor is told to meet there. This tree ornament is a Santa Barbara Christmas ornament and Santa Barbara souvenir, a piece of Santa Barbara history for Christmas in Santa Barbara.

3-inch faceted crystal glass ornament, white-backed print, line-drawn in 1880s engraving style, your choice of white or gold gift box.

Every Santa Barbara ornament ships ready to give, and profits support hunger relief. Hang it on the tree, in a window, off a lamp, or send one to the person who misses Santa Barbara most.

What’s with the Dolphins? At the foot of Stearns Wharf, where State Street meets the sea, a bronze family of dolphins leaps from a fountain that has welcomed a million visitors a year since 1985. Sculptor Bud Bottoms dedicated it to the Chumash people, whose word for dolphin — alolk’oy — means to go around, to protect, and to go in peace; a bronze plaque of a Chumash cave painting is set into its base. And the fountain has a twin: in Toba, Japan, Santa Barbara’s sister city since 1966, an identical Dolphin Friendship Fountain faces the Pacific from the other side — two pods of bronze dolphins, one ocean between them.

The twentieth century filled in the picture: the Santa Barbara Bowl opened in its sandstone canyon in 1936, the university arrived in 1944, and Old Spanish Days has filled the streets with dancers and riders every August since 1924. East Beach and West Beach meet at the wharf, the harbor shelters the fishing fleet behind its breakwater, and the dolphins — real ones — still work the channel the way the Chumash stories always said they did: going around, protecting, going in peace.

Why People Visit Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara offers a south-facing Pacific coast, a 1786 mission, a 1782 presidio, a 1929 courthouse, a 1922 Spanish courtyard, a 1872 wharf, and an entire downtown legislated into matching whitewashed stucco and red tile a hundred years ago. Visitors come for the Queen of the Missions, the courthouse tower view, the wharf at sunset, the four miles of beach, the August Fiesta, and the simple Mediterranean pleasure of a city where the rulebook for what a block should look like was written down and is still followed. It is the American Riviera, and the architecture earns the name.
