Porto at dusk, the way you remember it. The old houses of the Ribeira stacked up the hill with every window lit gold, the Bishop's Palace on top, the cathedral towers at the left and long ribbons of light running down the Douro. It is the view from the Gaia side at blue hour, hand-colored on crystal for the Porto lover, the family with Portuguese roots, or anyone still dreaming about that trip.
The Ribeira is the oldest part of Porto's waterfront, a tangle of narrow streets and tall, narrow houses climbing from the Cais da Ribeira quay toward the Sé, the city's cathedral, begun in the 12th century. Above it stands the Paço Episcopal, the Bishop's Palace, its long pale front rebuilt in the 18th century. In 1996 the Historic Centre of Oporto was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What makes the Ribeira is the light. As the sun goes down the houses glow orange and gold, the river turns deep blue, and the quay fills with people. The rabelo boats tied along the wall are the same boats that once carried port wine barrels downriver to the lodges across the water.
The drawing is our own: fine engraved line work under transparent washes of gold and blue, fading softly into the glass at the edges. It is set in a three-inch faceted crystal round, white-backed so the color stays bright against a lit tree or a window, and comes in a white or gold gift box.
A Portugal ornament for the tree, a gift from Portugal for someone who has been, or a reason to go. Profits support hunger relief.
