The Otterhound. Head back, mouth open, and the whole marsh listening. This is an 1870s pen-and-ink engraving of an otterhound doing the one thing the breed was famous for - sitting down on his haunches at the water's edge and singing out the moment he strikes a scent.
The otterhound is the rough-coated English scent hound, a direct descendant of the old southern hound with a hard outer coat and a thick woolly undercoat that kept him warm through a long day in cold rivers. He hunted low and slow but very sure, with a nose so tender he could own an otter's air bubble from yards away. Subscription packs hunted the summer rivers of Cumberland, Northumberland, Wales and Devon; the most famous was the Carlisle pack under Mr. Carrick, whose hound Stanley - a grizzled black-and-tan by Ringwood out of Harrison's Glory, first-prize winner at Glasgow, Birmingham and Nottingham in 1872 and 1873 - sat for this plate in Stonehenge's The Dogs of the British Islands.
Otter hunting is long gone and the otterhound very nearly went with it; today it is one of the rarest recognized breeds in the world, kept alive by a few hundred devoted households. Anyone who has lived with one, or with any big shaggy hound, knows the type: the webbed feet, the beard that drips on everything, the deep voice used at all hours. This ornament is for those dogs.
