She is not in a hurry, and she is not from Salem. A witch on a broomstick, seated sidesaddle above a wet New England dock, bare feet pointed, hat tipped, the broom just clearing the planks — engraved in the dense black-and-white line of an 1880s book illustration and printed on clear crystal. One wreath on the piling carries the only color.
Every New England town had a witch once, and most of them were somebody's neighbor. The panic of 1692 was not confined to Massachusetts. That same spring a seventeen-year-old servant girl in a Connecticut harbor town fell into fits and began naming women. Two of them were bound and put in the water to see whether they floated, and both did. Then the colony did something Salem never managed: seventy-six neighbors signed a petition for one of the accused, the magistrates asked the ministers whether a water test and a servant's visions were evidence of anything, the ministers said they were not, and by the end of October nobody had hanged. Connecticut had already executed eleven people for witchcraft between 1647 and 1663, and it never executed another. The witches went away. This one came back for the tree.
A three-inch clear crystal ornament with a faceted edge, the engraving printed to the glass so the hatching reads like an old plate held up to the light. She hangs on a Halloween tree in October and on the other tree in December without anyone having to explain her, and she does fine on a hook in a window where the fog can get at her. The wreath is spruce green with a cranberry bow, and that is all the color she needs.
For the friend who keeps the skeletons up until Thanksgiving, the New Englander who knows the trials were not only in Salem, the pinup collector, and anyone who likes a witch with good posture. As with everything we make, profits support hunger relief.
3-inch (76 mm) round crystal glass ornament, faceted gem-cut edge, white-backed print for crisp contrast, red ribbon hanger, white or gold gift box chosen at checkout, free U.S. shipping.
No one in 1692 looked like this. That is rather the point.
