The Noank heavy crewneck, for the town that built more wooden ships than anywhere in America. A classic 50/50 fleece sweatshirt with the Noank vintage retro logo on the chest in white: the plain, durable one.

Choose this crewneck for durability and price: classic fit, ribbed collar and cuffs, a fleece that shrugs off years of washing. It is the Noank sweatshirt to buy in twos, one for home and one for the person who grew up there, and it ships free in the U.S.

A classic-fit unisex crewneck in medium-heavy fleece, made for warmth and durability. Ribbed collar, cuffs & waistband, double-needle seams, and a tear-away label; DTG-printed design. Standard colors are 8.0 oz 50% cotton/50% polyester and Heather Sport colors are 60/40. White may appear off-white and the Orange hue may vary.

The Pequot summered on this steep little peninsula as Nauyang; the English acquired it by lottery in 1712, and the village grew from the 1840s on fishing and shipbuilding. The Palmer Brothers yard, founded about 1850, became the largest builder of wooden ships in the United States, launching hundreds of vessels from fishing smacks to Sound steamers.

The 1866 Emma C. Berry, a Noank smack built at the Palmer yard, is a National Historic Landmark at Mystic Seaport. The 1867 Baptist church crowns the hill, shipyard-worker cottages crowd the lanes, the Memorial Day parade has run since 1876, and the lobster shacks still steam at the end of the point. The mark on this piece is that working harbor.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

Around the yards grew a fishing village. Noank ran a fleet of more than sixty vessels, many of them share-owned by the families who crewed them, and the harbor filled with the work of fishing, oystering, and lobstering. A velvet mill opened in 1905; the Connecticut State Lobster Hatchery took root around 1912; and the lobster shacks that still steam at the water's edge carry the same trade forward. Noank has always made its living from the Sound.

Everything changed around 1850, when the Palmer brothers, John and Robert, established their shipyard and Noank found its calling. The yard built the famous 'Noank smack' — a fast, able fishing sloop native to the village — and one of them, the Emma C. Berry of 1866, survives today as a National Historic Landmark, the oldest commercial sailing vessel of her kind still afloat. The C. H. Mallory and Spicer steamship interests added to the bustle from 1861. For a few decades a tiny Connecticut point was a genuine center of American shipbuilding.

Why People Visit Noank

Noank rewards visitors who like their shoreline quiet and real — a working harbor instead of a boardwalk, a dense historic village instead of a strip. People come for the boatyards and the lobster shacks at the water's edge, for the walk through the cottage-lined historic district, and for the view out to the Sound from the end of the point. It is peaceful, photogenic, and unmistakably a Connecticut fishing village.
