The New Haven fleece, for the town that was America’s first planned city. An authentic Columbia MTR fleece, full-zip, with the New Haven vintage retro logo embroidered on the chest in white thread.

This is the top of the New Haven range: a real Columbia blank, embroidered to order, warm, light and fast-drying. It is the jacket for early mornings, the sideline and the drive home, and the New Haven gift that gets opened and put on immediately. Made to order, so allow the embroidery time before the holidays.

Our premium embroidered fleece jacket starts with an authentic Columbia blank in soft, warm MTR fleece and adds our vintage-retro logo, cleanly embroidered on the chest to order. The warm, lightweight full-zip is cut from MTR-style filament fleece (~7.4 oz/yd²) in an athletic, easy-layering fit with a stand collar and clean lines; it insulates on cool days, dries fast, and moves comfortably for walks, errands, travel, or campfire nights. Care: machine wash cold (gentle), dry flat, no bleach, no iron on decoration, no dry clean. Embroidery uses thread rather than ink, so slight differences from the digital product image are normal — full details and care instructions are in the page footer Embroidery note. New Haven was laid out on April 3, 1638, on John Brockett’s nine-square grid around the Green, the first planned city in what became the United States. In 1661 the regicides Whalley and Goffe hid from the Crown in Judges’ Cave on West Rock, Yale moved here from Saybrook in 1716, and the city served as co-capital of Connecticut until 1873.

Between the traprock ridges of East Rock and West Rock, the harbor is marked by the 1847 Five Mile Point Light at Lighthouse Point, the three churches still frame the Green, and New Haven-style apizza was born here. The Elm City’s four centuries are the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

The Elm City — America's first planned city, nine perfect squares laid out around a green in 1638. New Haven sits on Long Island Sound between the twin traprock ridges of East and West Rock — the Elm City of Connecticut. English Puritans laid it out in 1638 as the first planned city in America, nine squares around the New Haven Green, and within a generation it was hiding the men who had signed a king's death warrant in a cave on West Rock. Co-capital of Connecticut for the better part of two centuries, a Sound port lit by an 1847 brownstone lighthouse, and the birthplace of New Haven-style apizza. This page tells the story of the Elm City.

Today New Haven is the Elm City still — a harbor-and-ridge city of museums, theaters, and the most argued-over pizza in the country, anchored by four centuries of history. Its story runs from a Quinnipiac homeland through the first planned city in America, the regicides on West Rock, and a Long Island Sound port. Our New Haven designs gather that identity into wearable form — the Elm City, the nine-square Green, the oyster shore. From the nine-square Green to the regicides' cave on West Rock, wear a little of the Elm City's four centuries.

Why People Visit New Haven Connecticut

People come to New Haven for the layered history and the harbor — the first planned city in America, the regicides' cave, the lighthouse on the Sound — and for the museums, theaters, and the apizza the city argues about endlessly. It is compact, walkable, and deep: four centuries of New England on Long Island Sound.
