An iron-bound treasure chest half buried in the sand of a small wooded island, a crow on the lid. Captain Kidd stopped at Charles Island in 1699, and Milford has never stopped digging.

The legend holds that Kidd buried part of his treasure on Charles Island on his last voyage north, before his arrest in Boston. The island sits at the end of a sandbar that you can walk at low tide and that will strand you at high, which has kept generations of treasure hunters honest. Nothing has been found. People keep looking.

The island is said to carry three curses, which the town repeats with some pride. A walk out the bar at low water is a Milford rite, and most of the walkers glance at the ground.

Buried treasure that stays buried is better than treasure found. Milford has the chest in its imagination, and now on its tree.

Captain Kidd's treasure on Charles Island is the oldest of the Connecticut legends, and Milford CT has been looking for the buried treasure ever since. This treasure chest ornament is a pirate ornament and Milford Christmas ornament, a piece of Milford history for anyone who has walked the sandbar at low tide.

3-inch faceted crystal glass ornament, white-backed print, line-drawn in 1880s engraving style, your choice of white or gold gift box.

Every Milford ornament ships ready to give, and profits support hunger relief. Hang it on the tree, in a window, off a lamp, or send one to the person who misses Milford most.

The town still gathers where it always has. Since 1974 the Milford Oyster Festival has filled the Green and the downtown every August, growing into the largest single-day event in the state. Around it sits a historic downtown along the Wepawaug — the duck pond, the First Congregational Church, the Robert Treat Memorial Tower honoring the founders — a New Haven–area city that, through every change, has kept its harbor and its Green.

So Milford gathers a 1639 green, a treasure island, an oyster festival, and seventeen miles of shore onto Long Island Sound. Our Milford designs gather that into wearable form. Wear the history. On the Wepawaug since 1639 — Milford, CT.

Why People Visit Milford

Milford balances a historic green, a legendary island, and miles of easy shoreline. Visitors enjoy simple seaside walks, boardwalks, and small cultural stops between the beaches and the harbor. It is peaceful, family-friendly, and close to nature, with year-round appeal in its parks, paths, and public spaces. History and everyday coastal life sit side by side here, from the long Green and the colonial downtown to the oyster boats and the boardwalk beyond.
