The Mesquite fleece, for the town that is the Rodeo Capital of Texas. An authentic Columbia MTR fleece, full-zip, with the Mesquite vintage retro logo embroidered on the chest in white thread.

This is the top of the Mesquite range: a real Columbia blank, embroidered to order, warm, light and fast-drying. It is the jacket for early mornings, the sideline and the drive home, and the Mesquite gift that gets opened and put on immediately. Made to order, so allow the embroidery time before the holidays.

A warm, lightweight full-zip in Columbia’s soft MTR fleece, embroidered to order with our vintage-retro logo on the chest. The authentic Columbia blank uses MTR-style filament fleece (~7.4 oz/yd²) in an athletic, easy-layering fit with a stand collar and clean lines; it insulates dependably on cool days, dries fast, and moves comfortably for walks, errands, travel, or campfire nights. Care: machine wash cold (gentle), dry flat, no bleach, no iron on decoration, no dry clean. Because embroidery uses thread (not ink), slight differences from the digital product image are normal and part of the process — full details and care instructions are in the page footer Embroidery note. Mesquite began in May 1873 as a depot town on the Texas & Pacific Railway, named for Mesquite Creek, close enough to Dallas that Sam Bass robbed the train here in 1878 and got away with about $152. It incorporated on December 3, 1887, and laid out its town square in 1901.

The Mesquite Championship Rodeo has run since 1958, which earned the city its official state designation as the Rodeo Capital of Texas; the 1871 Florence Ranch Homestead keeps the farming years, and the old interurban line tied it to Dallas in the 1920s. The Rodeo Capital is the mark on this piece.

Our Mesquite logo carries a Texas longhorn — the cattle breed that built the open range — and a Lone Star over "1845," the year of statehood and the shared emblem of every Merlin Classics Texas place. Printed black-and-white with the worn look of a branding iron or an old rodeo poster, the longhorn and star read as Texas in shorthand: cattle country, the Lone Star, the open prairie. What makes this one Mesquite is the place behind it — the 1873 rail depot, the Sam Bass robbery, and the Rodeo Capital the prairie town became.

It started as a water stop on the railroad. In 1873 the Texas & Pacific Railway dropped a depot on the Blackland Prairie east of Dallas and named it for Mesquite Creek. Five years later it was famous for fifteen minutes: the outlaw Sam Bass robbed the train here in 1878, and rode off with about $152. The little rail town grew into a cotton community, then a Dallas suburb, and along the way became the official Rodeo Capital of Texas. Railroad town, outlaw country, Saturday-night rodeo — this is the real Mesquite, and this page tells that story.

Why People Visit Mesquite Texas

Most people know Mesquite for the rodeo and the shopping, but the city rewards anyone who looks for the older layer: a Texas & Pacific depot town from 1873, the site of a Sam Bass train robbery, and the official Rodeo Capital of Texas. It's flat, friendly North Texas — Dallas-close, but holding onto its own railroad-and-rodeo character.
