One small camel, one big market, and four good places to set down a glass.
Every caravan has one. The grown-up camels wait patiently to be loaded, and the littlest one has already wandered off toward the lanterns, the spices and the noise. He is only stopping by for a minute, he says. Set down your glass and keep him company.
He is Mustafa, The Littlest Camel, from The Adventures of Mustafa, The Littlest Camel, a picture book written and illustrated by J.K. Matthews. On his very first caravan day he slips away alone into the desert marketplace, where a snake charmer, a mask carver, a silk merchant and one very impatient English gentleman each teach him something about patience.
It is a story about the kindness of strangers, finding your way home safely, and the oldest advice there is: all good things come to those who wait. Which is also, as it happens, good advice while the kettle boils.
Each coaster carries the same sunset scene, set in a soft round vignette that fades into a warm ivory field: the little camel in his red-tasseled halter with the sun going down behind him, a striped market awning and glowing lanterns on one side, a date palm and a far-off caravan on the other. Four 4-inch hardboard squares, with cork backs that keep them from sliding and keep your table safe.
A warm hostess or housewarming gift, and a good one for camel lovers, travelers, anyone who has been to Morocco or the Middle East, and every household with a child who finds waiting hard. Profits support hunger relief.
Set of 4 · 4 x 4 in hardboard coasters · cork back · full-color dye-sublimation print
