When New Yorkers pulled down the gilded lead statue of King George III on Bowling Green in July 1776, the pieces were carted to Litchfield, where the women of the town and Oliver Wolcott's household melted them down into cartridges, some forty-two thousand of them by the tally Wolcott kept. Wolcott, a signer of the Declaration, lived on South Street, and the town was a Continental supply depot through the war.
Litchfield was incorporated in 1719 and became the seat of its county in 1751. Tapping Reeve opened the first law school in America here in 1784, Harriet Beecher Stowe was born on North Street in 1811, and the green, the white churches and the 1700s houses make the center one of the best-preserved colonial towns in New England.
