Every light on this sign is on: a kidney-shaped panel ringed in bulbs, an atomic starburst flaring behind it, and one word bent in glass tubing, Jackpot!, with a single lit bulb for the dot of the exclamation point. It is the sound of a lucky night, drawn in neon.
Las Vegas began as a railroad town in 1905, and by the 1930s Fremont Street carried so many neon signs that people called it Glitter Gulch. Nevada opened up legal gambling in 1931, and through the 1950s the sign makers kept trying to outshine one another: bulbs chasing around every edge, starbursts in the Atomic Age style of the decade, letters bent from glass tube and held off the sign face on small metal clips. Our drawing is new, made in that tradition, and it copies no real sign.
The word is older than the town. A jackpot started as poker slang in the 1870s, a pot that kept growing until someone could open with a pair of jacks or better; slot machines borrowed it in the 1930s. Nevada liked it well enough to name a whole town Jackpot in 1959.
The ornament is a three-inch round of crystal glass with a faceted, gem-cut edge, printed in full color and white-backed so the cherry red, teal and gold stay bright against the lights of a tree. It arrives boxed, your choice of white or gold gift box, ready to give.
For Vegas regulars, old Las Vegas romantics, Fremont Street walkers, card players, Las Vegas newlyweds, and anyone who ever came home a little luckier. Merlin Classics profits support hunger relief. See the rest of our crystal glass town ornaments.
