The Hilo tank, for the town that is the rainiest city in America. Lightweight Airlume cotton jersey with the Hilo vintage retro logo on the chest in white, for the hottest months of the year.

The tank is the summer Hilo piece: light enough for the trail, the boat and the porch, cut in a retail unisex fit that runs true to size. Order it before the warm weather does the deciding for you.

Lightweight Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton jersey in a retail fit that runs true to size for adults. Side-seam construction and self-fabric binding keep the shape, and the label is tear-away. Solid colors are 100% cotton, while select heather/prism shades may include cotton–poly or cotton–poly–rayon blends.

Hilo sits on its bay on the windward coast of the Big Island, the seat of Hawaiʻi County since 1905, a long-settled Native Hawaiian community that grew into a sugar port through the 1800s. About 128 inches of rain fall on more than 270 days a year, the most of any city in the United States, and the result is a green world of waterfalls and gardens.

Rainbow Falls drops on the Wailuku River at the edge of town, Liliʻuokalani Gardens have been laid out in the Japanese style since 1917, and the early-1900s storefronts of Kamehameha Avenue face the open bayfront with Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa behind. The garden city of the windward shore is the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

Hilo's story begins on the bay. Native Hawaiians settled this rain-fed eastern coast of Hawaiʻi Island for centuries, farming kalo (taro) in the wet lowlands, fishing the bay and reefs, and reading the rivers that run down from the mountains. In the bay sits Mokuola — Coconut Island — whose name means “island of life,” long known as a place of healing and refuge. This was a settled, cultivated landscape, rich in water and tradition, generations before any ship from the outside world dropped anchor in Hilo Bay. East of town the shoreline turns to black rock and sheltered pools — Onekahakaha, Carlsmith, Richardson — where families still swim in water warm enough to forget the rain.

The bay made the town. Through the nineteenth century, traders and missionaries arrived, a harbor grew on the crescent shore, and Hilo became the commercial and shipping center of the island's eastern side. Behind it all rose the great mountains — Mauna Kea, often snow-capped, and Mauna Loa — feeding the rivers and the famous Hilo rain that keeps the whole coast green. Two rivers, the Wailuku and the Wailoa, run down through the town to the bay. About 126 inches of rain fall here in an average year, spread across more than 270 days of it, which makes Hilo one of the rainiest cities in the country and the reason for the rainforest at its back. That abundance of water is the through-line of Hilo's whole story, from the taro fields to the waterfalls to the famous green of the place.

Why People Visit Hilo

Hilo offers the most authentic, culturally rich side of Hawaiʻi Island — waterfalls, gardens, markets, and deep Hawaiian heritage, all in a relaxed bayfront town. Visitors come for the rainforest scenery and the easy access to volcanoes and coast, and stay for the unhurried, welcoming feel of a real town rather than a resort strip. From the morning rainbows at Waiānuenue to the gardens along the bay, it rewards a slow pace. It is green, genuine, and beautiful in every season on the bay.
