The Hilo cap, for the town that is the rainiest city in America. An unstructured cotton dad cap with the Hilo vintage retro logo embroidered on the front in black thread.

The cap is the easiest Hilo piece to wear every day and the easiest to give: one size, breathable cotton, a curved visor and an antique-brass buckle. It softens with wear and stays on the hook by the door. Order one for the beach bag and one for the glovebox.

This unisex dad cap is made from breathable cotton in a low-profile, unstructured 6-panel shape with a Permacurv visor. A self-fabric hideaway strap with antique-brass buckle adjusts the fit, and a matching undervisor and four-row visor stitching add durability. The embroidered finish is classic and vintage-inspired. All colors 100% cotton; camo is 65% polyester / 35% cotton. Because embroidery uses thread (not ink), slight differences from the digital product image are normal and part of the process — see our Embroidery footer for full details.

Hilo sits on its bay on the windward coast of the Big Island, the seat of Hawaiʻi County since 1905, a long-settled Native Hawaiian community that grew into a sugar port through the 1800s. About 128 inches of rain fall on more than 270 days a year, the most of any city in the United States, and the result is a green world of waterfalls and gardens.

Rainbow Falls drops on the Wailuku River at the edge of town, Liliʻuokalani Gardens have been laid out in the Japanese style since 1917, and the early-1900s storefronts of Kamehameha Avenue face the open bayfront with Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa behind. The garden city of the windward shore is the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

Our Hilo logo carries the same emblem every Merlin Classics Hawaiʻi place wears — the hibiscus, above “Hawaiian Kingdom · Est. 1795,” the year of unification under Kamehameha, printed in a worn, hand-pressed black and white. The hibiscus is the islands' mark, the through-line that ties Hilo to every other Hawaiʻi place we make — a nod to the aloha that defines them. What makes this one Hilo is everything around it: the bay, Rainbow Falls on the Wailuku, and the rain-green mountains behind the town.

What's with Rainbow Falls? Just above town, the Wailuku River pours over the lip of a lava cave into a wide green pool, and on a clear Hilo morning the mist throws a rainbow across the whole scene. Hawaiians call the place Waiānuenue — “rainbow seen in water” — and in the old stories the cave below was a dwelling place in Hawaiian tradition. The falls drop about eighty feet and run close to a hundred across when the river is high. Reach it early, before the tour vans, when the sun is low and the spray is bright, and you'll see exactly how the falls earned both their names. It is the easiest wonder to find in Hilo, and one of the loveliest in all Hawaiʻi.

Why People Visit Hilo

Hilo offers the most authentic, culturally rich side of Hawaiʻi Island — waterfalls, gardens, markets, and deep Hawaiian heritage, all in a relaxed bayfront town. Visitors come for the rainforest scenery and the easy access to volcanoes and coast, and stay for the unhurried, welcoming feel of a real town rather than a resort strip. From the morning rainbows at Waiānuenue to the gardens along the bay, it rewards a slow pace. It is green, genuine, and beautiful in every season on the bay.
