How did mahjong spread across China? Likely along the coast and rivers. Early collectors found sets in treaty ports, including Ningbo, Shanghai and Fuzhou.
A traveling tile needs a traveling bottle. This slim insulated bottle with the One Bam suits anyone who has played in more than one country, and it holds up well to long drives, ferries and airports along the way.
The 1842 Treaty of Nanking opened Canton, Amoy, Foochow, Ningpo and Shanghai to foreign trade. Collectors recorded sets at Fuzhou in 1872 and at Shanghai and Ningbo. In November 1887, Shanghai police ordered play to stop, which only moved it into the brothels.
By 1892 it was fashionable in Suzhou, and in 1905 a Beijing report described a 140-tile set with English letters. How exactly it traveled remains partly an inference. But the trail of evidence runs through ports. A game that started near the water went wherever the boats did, and it has never really stopped.
Insulated steel with a double wall, 20 ounces, slim enough for a bag's side pocket, in matte white with the bird on the front. To protect the coating, hand wash and keep it out of dishwashers and microwaves. Like everything in our shop, this one means profits support hunger relief.
