Where did a generation of American players learn the game? Largely in Catskills bungalow colonies, where one woman played every weeknight while 24 bungalows shared a single washing machine.
Take this one on the summer's road. The Big Joker on a slim insulated bottle goes to the pool, the lake house, and the folding table under the trees, and it keeps your water cold through a long second round.
At their mid-century peak, the Catskills drew an estimated one to more than two million visitors a year, across a region some 100 miles northwest of New York City. Families took cottages known as kuchalayn, Yiddish for cook-alone, and husbands often came up only on weekends.
That left long weekdays, and mah jongg filled them in the colony casino or on the lawn. Big resorts advertised tournaments, and a 1955 photograph shows play outdoors at a Port Jervis hotel. Many daughters first heard the tiles there. Next time you play outside, you are keeping a very old summer custom.
A slim 20 oz stainless steel bottle with double-wall vacuum insulation and a smooth matte white finish. It is sized for a bag or a table beside your rack. Hand wash only; do not put it in the dishwasher or microwave. As with everything we make, profits support hunger relief.
