What is riichi? A bold move: you lay down a 1,000-point stick and declare that your hand is one tile from winning.

This tee is for the player who likes to announce it. Red, green and a blank white tile make a quiet signal to anyone who knows the game, and a good excuse to explain the rules to anyone who does not.

Declaring riichi locks your hand and stakes a 1,000-point stick on it. Win, and the tiles beneath the dora indicators become extra bonus tiles. The rule was codified in the Hochi newspaper's rules of 1952, when the stake was just 300 points from a 5,000-point start.

Where it came from is less clear. Accounts point to Manchuria and returning postwar players, and to dates as early as 1930. The word 立直 is said to be Chinese in origin, and it does not come from the English reach. So ask a player what riichi means, and be ready for a very long answer.
