How did mahjong get from Shanghai to America? Through a Standard Oil salesman, a Shanghai trademark and a San Francisco importer, all within roughly two years around 1920.
Pour one for the middlemen. This glass carries the bird that crossed the Pacific with them, and it will suit a good story told slowly, late in the evening, once the tiles are back in the box.
A Standard Oil salesman posted to Suzhou from 1917 wrote the English rules, first printed in September 1920. Shanghai's Albert Hager filed the first trademark in October 1921, and a Mah-Jongg company of China was formed in early 1922.
From San Francisco, W.A. Hammond imported about $50,000 of the $56,000 in sets shipped by September 1922. By October 1923, about 300,000 sets were estimated sold. Three men, two years, and a parlor game from China had taken over America. Business does not always move that fast, but it does when a game is this good.
Tempered clear glass, 10 ounces, weighty enough to feel like a real bar glass, with the printed tile on the side. Please wash by hand. Remove the small barcode sticker on the underside before using it. Like everything in our shop, this one means profits support hunger relief.

How do I care for my item?
For apparel: wash cold, inside-out, with like colors; avoid bleach and high heat; tumble dry low or hang dry. For embroidery, iron inside-out to protect the stitching.
