How crazy was America's first mah jongg craze? By 1924, a Washington hotel had bathers playing in its pool, with an estimated 300,000 sets already sold.

Raise a glass to a decade that lost its head over tiles. The Big Joker on clear glass is a fine pour for your own version of the party, whether your game runs on rye, ginger ale or a pot of decaf.

The game's American peak came in 1923 and 1924, when it reached the Harding White House. The Los Angeles Times estimated about 300,000 sets sold by October 1923, and nearly $850,000 in sets in nine months. The Washington Post reported a city gone mad for it. A June 1924 photograph shows bathers at the tiles in a hotel pool.

It was also the Prohibition years, though nothing ties the craze to speakeasies, and the costumed Chinese parties of the time look awkward now. New York's Plaza even hosted a fete with ballet. By decade's end the fad had faded, but a smaller, more serious game stayed. Nothing lasts like a hobby that survives its own hype.

A clear 10 oz tempered rocks glass with room for a large cube, printed so the tile holds its color against the drink. Please hand wash to protect the print. A barcode sticker sits under the base and peels off. As with everything we make, profits support hunger relief.
