Did the mah jongg craze really cause an eye complaint? So it seems. In January 1924, optometrists were reported to be seeing something called Mah Jongg Eye.
Light this one for a slower evening at the table. The Big Joker sits on a soy candle in clear glass, a warm finish for the room where the last hand always runs long and nobody wants to go home.
By 1924 the game had leapt well past the table. Sheet music counters sold songs about it, including a 1922 number from San Francisco, and it appeared in a Broadway show. There were mah jongg bathing suits and hosiery. Newspapers reported on it the way later decades covered hula hoops.
Some of that culture has aged badly, and a few of those songs are best left in the archive. The sharper image is the optometrists, reporting a complaint from too many late nights over small tiles. Keep that in mind as you squint at the card by candlelight. Your eyes are in good company.
