When did mahjong reach Japan? Around 1910. Tokyo had hundreds of parlours within two decades, and then a war took nearly all of them away.

A warm crewneck for the student of the long game. The honor tiles look plain and old against soft cotton, a good match for anyone who reads the introduction first, and who knows the difference between a hanchan and a hunch.

Natsume Soseki described four men gambling with 50 or 60 thick pieces in a 1909 travelogue, though he never names mahjong, and it may have been another game. A teacher reportedly brought tiles home around 1910. A rental parlour opened in Ginza by 1927.

Then it boomed. Tokyo had 937 parlours by May 1930, and about 2,000 stood before 1937. By 1942, the number had dropped to 230. The takeaway: this game once nearly vanished from Japan, and it came back stronger after the war. Few hobbies have that much resilience.

An easy crew in a cotton-rich blend, 80/20 on most colors, with ribbing at the collar, cuffs and waist. No scratchy tag. Wash inside out in cold water, without softener or bleach. Dry low, keep a low iron off the print, and do not dry clean. Every sale counts: profits support hunger relief.
