Why is it called the Charleston? Nobody really knows. The name may nod to the 1920s dance, but no record proves it, and it remains the game's favorite mystery.
Right, across, left. This hoodie is for everyone who has muttered that under her breath at the table. The Big Joker rides on the chest of a cozy pullover built for chilly card rooms and long second Charlestons.
Every American game opens the same way. Players pass three tiles right, three across, three left. A second Charleston reverses the order, and any one player can stop it. After that comes an optional courtesy pass of up to three tiles with the person opposite. No other form of the game does this.
The dance reached Broadway in Runnin' Wild in October 1923, the very height of the first mah jongg craze, which is why the connection is so tempting. One writer calls it a guess, and even the league reportedly cannot say. Tell it that way at your table: the pass is law, its name a riddle.
A pullover hoodie with a cotton-faced fleece, a lined three-panel hood and side seams. Wash cold inside out and tumble dry low. Use only non-chlorine bleach if needed, and skip the iron and the dry cleaner. It is cut for an easy, unisex fit, so check the size table below. As with everything we make, profits support hunger relief.
