The tallest thing on the farm, in pen and ink on crystal glass.

An American farm windmill in pen and ink: a shingled tower five stories tall, a railed gallery under an octagonal cap, and the steel wheel and vane turning on top, drawn from a 1903 tower on a New England hilltop farm and printed on a 3-inch round of faceted crystal glass. This is the tower-and-tank windmill of the eastern estate and the big dairy farm, built heavier than its prairie cousin so the tank in its top could gravity-feed the barns and house below, and tall enough that the wheel found wind above the trees.

The self-governing farm windmill is a Connecticut invention. In 1854 a young mechanic named Daniel Halladay, working in Ellington, built a wheel that turned itself into the wind and feathered its blades in a gale, so a farmer could leave it alone for weeks. The railroads took it west to water their locomotives, the homesteaders took it onto the plains, and by 1900 steel wheels on wooden and steel towers stood by the hundreds of thousands from the Hudson to the Rockies, pumping the water that made the dry country farmable. Back east the same machine grew a tower and a tank and became the tallest thing on the farm.

Most of them are gone now, taken down for scrap or left to the vines, and the ones still standing have become landmarks: the tower you steer by on a back road, the one a town paints on its welcome sign, the one a family photographs every Thanksgiving. The sound of a wheel ticking around in a light breeze is one of the oldest sounds in American farming, and this drawing is for anyone who grew up within earshot of it.

The tower sits on a white-backed face for crisp contrast, while the clear gem-cut beveled edge catches the tree lights and throws a subtle halo around the image. A slim red ribbon threads the top for hanging from a branch, mantel hook or stand. A true 3-inch round in solid crystal glass, it arrives in your choice of white or gold gift box, ready to give as-is, tuck into a stocking or keep for the collection.

A decorative piece for adult collectors, not a toy; real glass, so hang it high if little hands roam the tree. Handle with care and wipe gently with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Part of the Heritage Ornament Collection, national pieces of American history on crystal glass, this is the ornament for farm and ranch families, for anyone restoring or living under an old windmill, for agricultural and rural history buffs and for the gift list that already has the lighthouse and the red mill. Profits support hunger relief.
